Fraser Island short facts

Australia Fraser Island - Lake Mckenzie

Situated on the coast of Queensland, Australia about 300 kilometers north of Brisbane. Made almost entirely out of sand, it is home to unique rainforest, dozens of lakes and huge sand blows. As Fraser Island is a World Heritage National Park, it attracts many visitors from all over the world.

At the West coast, located in a tranquil valley lies world renowned Kingfisher Bay Resort, a multi award winning eco resort with a variety of hotel rooms and luxurious villa's. Kingfisher Bay Resort offers a great opportunity to combine luxury, a relaxed atmosphere and a top rating National Park experience.

On the East coast there are several small populated areas nearly completely focused on tourism and holiday goers. These areas are Eurong Beach Resort and together with Eurong Second Valley offer a variety of motel style accommodation and holiday homes as well as a shop, bakery, restaurant and petrol station.

Further North you'll find Happy Valley where again you find holiday accommodation, a shop, restaurant and petrol station which cater for the many visitors to Fraser Island.

North again along magnificent Seventy-Five mile Beach you arrive at Cathedral Beach. Here you have the opportunity to stock up on essentials and petrol. Here you'll also find a well placed camping ground with powered and unpowered sites.

Heading North again you'll arrive at Orchid Beach. Holiday rental homes along with permanent residents have created the only truly village like cluster of houses with hardened street surfaces.

Inland on Fraser Island there are no facilities available, except for some camping areas set up by Queensland National Parks. These sites have water and a few also provide showers and toilets.

Fraser Island - Sand Tracks Forest

Camping outside designated camping areas is not permitted. The only exception to this is along the Ocean Beach where you are allowed to camp almost anywhere.

Fraser Island is strictly 4WD country and in order to access it with your own vehicle you'll need a National Park Vehicle Permit. Many visitors who do not want to bring their own vehicle or don't have a 4WD decide to hire a 4WD vehicle. A number of 4WD hiring companies offer accommodation or camping equipment as package deals.

Another option is to try one of the many guided Fraser Island Tours. There are several different tours on offer, ranging from 1 day tours to extensive 5 day tours, camping safaris or combined with luxury accommodation, personalised tours just for your family or group and budget friendly large group tours. A guided tour is a "not to be missed" experience.
